Smart will be giving its new Fourjoy concept a world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it will no doubt garner much attention with its totally off-the-wall style. It’s got no doors, no rear window and an open roof, while inside it’s got lounge-style seating for four.
It’s still typically Smart small, with a length of just under 3.5m, a height of less than two metres and a width of about 1.5m, but clever packaging, according to Smart, means capaciousness is no problem. Furthermore, its agile, and light, and this means Smart has made maximum use of the 55kW magneto-electric motor. On top of that, the Fourjoy showcases the future of the brand’s design, though it remains typically Smart. According to Gorden Wagener, head of design at Daimler AG, ‘The typical Smart silhouette, the clear lines and styling and also the further development of the Smart face make this study a modern design icon.’
Dr Annette Winkler, head of Smart, says, ‘The Smart Fourjoy is a study that successfully translates the unique design and urban driving fun of the Smart Fortwo to an extremely compact four-seater. Numerous details of previous show cars that received very positive feedback have been incorporated in the Fourjoy. The exterior proportions already reveal a lot about the appearance of our four-seater production Smart which will be launched at the end of 2014 and will also enable families to travel together in a Smart.’
While Smart says that the lack of doors, a roof or a rear windscreen brings the city inside, the Fourjoy is quite cool inside in its own right. Futuristic seats and touch-sensitive operations on the convex central structure are just the beginning, because this thing comes with electric skateboards and helmets that you can ride for the last little bit of your journey. They, of course, like the concept, create zero emissions.
